Ford Mustang Spy Photos 2015

2015 Ford Mustang Spy Photos

The next-gen Stang registers as an independent. For now, at least.

What It Is: A hacked-together 2015 Ford Mustang prototype based on the current car. The next-gen Mustang is set to debut sometime in 2014 with the current model’s six- and eight-cylinder engines. An EcoBoost four-cylinder engine will be added to the lineup, as well.
Why It Matters: Like you don’t know. This is the original pony car, the affordable sporty car for the everyman; and any major revision to the Mustang is reason to sit up and take notice. The 2015 Mustang is shaping up to be a revolutionary iteration of the breed; it’s expected to shrink slightly in size, offer turbocharged power for the first time in almost three decades, and—prepare yourself—might finally ditch its solid rear axle for an independent setup.
Platform: We expect the next Mustang will sit on a heavily revised version of the outgoing car’s platform. The biggest change, of course, is headed for the pony car’s rear suspension. There’s a pretty good chance the current model’s archaic solid rear axle will go the way of the dodo. We’ve heard Ford has yet to make a final decision as to whether the new Mustang will get a solid or independent rear suspension, but that the independent rear is more likely given that all of the Mustang’s competitors have one. (The previous-gen car was tested with both types before Ford settled on keeping the stick axle.) The only factory Mustang to ever ride on an independent rear suspension was the SVT Cobra model produced between 1999 and 2004.
Which brings us to the car in these spy photos—it clearly has IRS. (Update: A new photo has been added below that gives a better look at the IRS setup on this prototype; an image of the current Mustang's solid rear axle also was added for comparison.) A suspension arm is visible in the rear shots, and the rear wheels have a healthy amount of camber. (Solid axles don’t have camber—the wheels are perpendicular to the plane of the axle.) We’ve learned most of the length reduction will come from the car’s rear overhang, and the width adjustment is visible on this test car’s ill-fitting roof panel. Both coupe and convertible body styles will again make production. Although the prototype car in these photos is wearing current-gen retro-look Mustang body panels, we expect that the 2015 car’s cosmetics will fall somewhere between that model and Ford’s recent Evos concept car.

Powertrain: The Mustang’s 3.7-liter V-6 and 5.0-liter Coyote V-8 will return for 2015—possibly with the addition of direct injection—but will be joined by a turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder engine. Ford already confirmed that an EcoBoost is headed for the Mustang, but didn’t specify when. We’re told it will arrive with the redesigned model—and not before—and that it likely will be Ford’s 2.0-liter mill.
So where would the EcoBoost four fit into the Mustang’s engine lineup? In Ford’s Edge and Explorer crossovers, the EcoBoost is a step-up engine that’s marketed for its fuel efficiency. The Mustang SVO model Ford peddled in the mid-1980s featured a turbocharged four, and it was considered the most premium and sport pony in the lineup. We doubt such a trim-level hierarchy would fly for the current Mustang; back then, the turbo four made power comparable to that of the “4.9” V-8 on offer. Today, we are blessed with Ford’s wonderful 5.0 V-8, which makes 420 hp in the Mustang GT. So, expect the four-cylinder to slot somewhere below the V-8, possibly as the base engine.
Competition: Chevrolet Camaro, Hyundai Genesis Coupe, Scion FR-S, Subaru BRZ.
Estimated Arrival Time and Price: The 2015 Mustang will debut sometime in 2014, although Ford may initially debut it as a 2014.5 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first 1964.5 model. Don’t be surprised if the Mustang gets a little more expensive; some increase in price is nearly guaranteed if the independent rear suspension makes it to production

Chrysler Readying SRT Barracuda to Succeed Challenger 2013

The Pentastar's performance brand will get a second model.

Not much about the 2013 Viper deviates from the formula that made the car famous—it has a monstrous V-10, rear-wheel drive, and a manual transmission, and it still looks ready for a 10-on-1 bar fight. Branding it not a Dodge but an SRT, however, has raised eyebrows. Giving that new brand heft is a second model: the 2015 SRT Barracuda, the Dodge Challenger’s replacement.
Unlike the Viper, it will be a dramatic departure. Chrysler’s LX platform (Chrysler 300, Dodge Magnum and Charger) benefited from front and rear suspension setups derived from the Mercedes-Benz S- and E-class, respectively, but it’s huge for a pony car. Since the Challenger’s inception, the LX has evolved into the LY and gained weight in the process. Now that it’s part of Fiat, Dodge would like to export Challengers, but their mass and zaftig proportions limit overseas sales potential. With fuel economy a growing priority—not to mention four-cylinder versions of both the Mustang and Camaro on the horizon—Chrysler needed to slim down its offering. Fortunately, Fiat has been on the prowl for a rear-drive platform for use by Lancia, Alfa Romeo, and possibly Maserati. These factors motivated Chrysler to develop a new platform, and the Barracuda will be its first fruit.

Similar in size to the current Mustang, the Barracuda is expected to lose more than six inches from the Challenger’s wheelbase and close to eight in overall length. Rear track and overall width are forecast to shrink by a bit more than two inches. Weight will drop by between 250 and 300 pounds. The front suspension may move from control arms to a strut setup; the rear suspension will remain multilink, with new geometry.
Mindful of tightening CAFE requirements, powertrain offerings will expand to include at least one variant of the new 2.4-liter Tigershark inline-four, possibly force-fed. While the 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 is expected to get direct injection at about the time the ’Cuda arrives, CAFE more than market demand will determine whether a V-6 is offered. Expect the Hemi V-8 to carry on, with direct injection increasing power and efficiency. We hear it’s unlikely that both the 5.7- and 6.4-liter versions will be offered but hope Chrysler reverses its thinking there. Two Hemis would go a long way toward cementing the SRT brand’s authenticity.

Audi A3 Sedan 2014

The 2014 Audi A3 appears to be a cool and classy-looking luxury ride. But if you're hankering for a hatchback, you'd better not wait for the new model. The next A3 is coming to the U.S. only in sedan format, whereas the 5-door hatchback continues to be offered in Europe. Rubbing some salt in the wound is the fact that the A3 sedan is arriving only after the hatchback goes on sale in other markets.
Coolly Seductive
Like it or not, in the States many consumers think a hatchback layout is more befitting an economy car. While we'll miss the functionality of the A3 hatchback, these illustrations of the A3 sedan indicate that this little Audi sedan is going to be a looker. The lines are solid and very, well, Germanic in appearance. Sculpted sides and subtle fender flares add a nice touch of aggression to the handsome exterior.

2014 Audi A3 Sedan
Audi served up an A3 concept sedan during last year’s Geneva Auto Show. At 174.8 in. overall, the Audi A3 (concept) sedan is approximately 6 in. longer than the current A3 wagon. While the show-car had some razzle-dazzle features – like a 408-bhp 5-cylinder engine and chrome-intensive grille – it seems likely these proportions will carry-over into production models.
A3 sedans bound for the U.S. will probably feature a choice of two 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engines, one gasoline- and one diesel-fueled. A hybrid and even an electric-powered variant are also expected to join the lineup. A 7-speed S tronic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive will be available, though front-wheel drive and a 6-speed manual will almost certainly be fitted to base models. Audi builds some great interiors, so expect the A3 cabin to include plenty of high-quality materials in a business-class level of refinement and comfort.
The entry-level price for the A3 sedan will fall somewhere around $30,000, and U.S. sales should begin sometime in early 2013 (for the 2014 model year).

2014 Kia Provo Concept looks ready to take the fight to Mini

That mystery Kia concept that was teased a couple months ago? This is it: the Kia Provo, and it's way better than the teaser shots communicated. One thing is obvious. If Kia builds this, and they should, because it looks terrific, they'll be going after the Mini Cooper and its competitors like the Audi A1 and Citroen DS3. And they'll do so with a product that looks very much the part.
Power comes from Kia's 1.6-liter GDI turbo four making around 201 horsepower. It drives the front wheels via a 7-speed DCT gearbox, but an electric motor for the rear wheels gives the car what Kia calls "smart 4WD"
The Provo would turn heads on street corners from London to, well, Utah, thanks to its squat, bulldog stance and athletic hot-hatch profile. This is a styling win on all levels: Cooper S-meets-GTI on the outside, with a show-car interior that wouldn't look wrong in an Aston Martin.
We cannot wait to see this thing in person on Tuesday

Ford Mustang will get 2.3-liter EcoBoost in U.S. 2015

Yesterday, Edmunds broke the news that the 2015 Ford Mustang will receive Ford's 2.3-liter EcoBoost four cylinder. It was also reported that the engine will be a Europe-only option. That's incorrect. Road & Track has confirmed that we will indeed get the 2.3-liter turbo four here in the U.S. market. Furthermore, don't bet on it being the base engine, either.
Ford precedent shows that in other cars and crossovers offering an EcoBoost mill, it's positioned as a premium upgrade, whether you're talking about the Fusion, the Escape. the Explorer, and so on. And with that in mind, the speculation can get fun. Bet on the base 305-horsepower 3.7-liter V6 sticking around as the lowest-cost entry point for Mustang buyers. That means the EcoBoost is likely to come in at over 300 horsepower, as it's unlikely Ford could otherwise sell Americans on a less powerful four-banger as an "upgrade," despite the attendant benefits related to fuel economy. The V8 will remain the range-topper in the GT, as well it should.
Hopefully, the upgraded engine lineup in the '15 Stang will bring paddle-shift automatics as well. I say this as the temporary driver of a '13 V6 with an automatic while my 06 GT gets some love at the body shop. Because a "sport" transmission mode that makes you use a rocker switch like you're in a Buick Enclave is un-sporty and unworthy of the original ponycar.
So where's your head in all this? Will a ballsy enough turbo four make you consider pulling the trigger on the EcoBoost Mustang?

Bentley Continental GT Speed Convertible Breaks Cover 2013

Photos of the 2013 Bentley Continental GT Speed leaked on Christmas Eve, and now there are solid numbers to go along with them.
Really, there's not much to say that the pics don't already show. The convertible is just like the GT Speed coupe, only it'll seriously molest your hair. Tony Manero need not apply. The rest of you, feel free.
The all-wheel-drive ragtop is powered by a twin-turbo W12 engine mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Power and torque are predictably ridiculous: 616 bhp and 590 lb-ft. That max torque is available at just 2,000 rpm is the container-ship full of maraschino cherries on top.
Zero to sixty takes a scant 4.1 seconds, and the GT Speed Convertible will just keep on going until it hits its top end of 202 miles per hour. For all practical purposes, that's as fast as the hardtop, which, on paper, is technically a tenth of a second quicker to 60 and 3 mph better overall.
And as you can see, it'll be available in Bentley's eye-popping magenta paint. Fitting, right? Deep purple for the highway star. Remember, you can just outrun the haters.
The GT Speed convertible makes its world debut in a couple of weeks at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.

McLaren's product pipeline is cooking 2014

Jamey Price
McLaren Automotive COO Mike Flewitt was in a good mood when we caught up with him for a few minutes here in Geneva. And why wouldn't he be? The McLaren stand was constantly abuzz as media, well-heeled customers, and other VIPs filed in and out of the stand. On display are the P1 and the MP4-12C lineup, as well as one of the unicorn-rare F1 LM cars.
Flewitt's as excited as everyone else about the P1, and said that the company is working through the long list of hand-raisers who've already shown interest in plunking down a million-plus bucks to take home the organic-looking supercar. And based on Flewitt's experience, it's likely that several P1s will land in Stateside. So far, the U.S. accounts for some 45% of the automaker's sales.

The conversation took a natural turn to the LaFerrari, creating its own mob scene on the other side of the Palexpo exhibition center. While the P1's stated top speed is 217 mph, that's an electronically limited number. "Our engineers feel we can beat it on top speed, and that we'll be faster around a circuit," he said of the P1's performance potential. All said with a smile, mind you. Flewitt understands better than anyone what a boon it is for enthusiasts to have McLaren and Ferrari launching flagship supercars at the same time. It's Ali-Frazier with million-dollar cars, as much fun for him as it is for you and me.
When we asked how McLaren follows up the P1, Flewitt was surprisingly forthcoming, while also managing to avoid specifics. We can confirm, however, that the next McLaren model will be a new MP4-12C variation, due next year. And then, get ready. An all-new McLaren will debut in 2015. Commence speculating, kids.
For now, however, it's going to be a big ongoing P1 party. So if you're looking to buy, let those guys know. P1 customers get to visit Woking as part of the process.

Of all things, a couple of strange SUVs

Perhaps it was just the fatigue of being bombarded with the sights and sounds of Geneva — everywhere I turned, it seemed an unobtainable supercar was staring me in the face — but when I came across these two small SUVs, they really caught my eye.
The Dacia Duster shares its platform with the Nissan Juke and several other European and Japanese Renaults, but it looked larger. Perhaps it was the blacked-out steelies, or the little arrow indicating the towing eye, or just the overall shape and stance, but it was handsome for a soft-roader.
But it was the Tata Safari Storme's unmissable red-and-white checker, complete with snow chains and a brace of fog lights, which attracted me like a moth to a HID headlight. I was entirely unfamiliar with the Indian firm's SUV, but it had all the charisma of the non-US market Japanese off-roaders that I grew up loving —the 70-series Land Cruiser and the 160-series Nissan Patrols. No clue what it's like on-road or off (and a brief look at other reviewer's impressions is not particularly inspiring), but man, it looked good.
Enjoy the galleries as a way to relax your mind a bit from the overwhelming awesomeness of the other Geneva debuts.
